When did trainers become high fashion?

Most kids live in trainers, comfortable and convenient. As a matter of fact ‘doing up your laces’ is almost a rite of passage. The truth is I have never liked trainers. I doubt that I ever will. There was this one term I wore trainers for physical education in secondary school. Anyone in possession of a photograph is sitting on a gold mine. I discovered plimsoles and trainer shoes and was rescued.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s not that I think that all trainers are ugly. It’s just that me and them will never be friends. The problem is while I was busy hating trainers they suddenly became hot must-haves. But not just any old trainers. Trainers with a wedge? Re-defining everyday comfort and merging it with pure hotness.

The designer Isabel Marant put them on the map (as far as I know.) Celebrities left right and centre have been caught doing everyday tasks in her designs. Case example; Dakota Fanning….
